How can you identify what programs youth want?

  • Ask them!!
  • Ask their families
  • Talk with youth leaders
  • Surveys
  • Trail and error
  • Involve youth in planning
  • Discuss "hot topics"-develop info pieces around these topics
  • Discuss current "youth" events or pop culture-even if you use curriculum-find ways to make it "relevant"
  • Advisory board for teens/youth

Give examples of innovative programs that interest youth.

  • Peer counseling
  • Yoga
  • Encouraging youth in political process-presidential, city, voter registration
  • Dance lessons
  • Youth led anti-bullying campaigns (cyber-bullying)
  • Website development
  • Movie making
  • Leadership development
  • Helping in community/volunteering
  • Mentoring
  • Getting to be part of something "bigger" than themselves
  • Technology based programs
  • Working with animals
  • Co-ed
  • Website design/digital arts
  • Create own music/CD with beats and vocals
  • Photography

List creative ways of getting the word out about youth programs.

  • Word of mouth
  • Flyers (have kids help create)
  • Have youth pull other youth in
  • My Space page for your program
  • Local cable access
  • Email address copy-ability to report troubling behaviors or ask for advice
  • Stickers on candy bars
  • By word of mouth-offer incentives to bring a friend
  • Radio stations
  • Festivals (free) or outdoor venues-parks, town squares, etc.

List ways to make youth programs more accessible.

  • Go to them-find out where kids are spending time
  • Get funding for transportation
  • Low cost; easy registration
  • Sharing collaborative resources
  • Dual programs=adults and children (family)
  • Get a van
  • Diversify your staff
  • Find the times they are available not the time when it is convenient for the adults
  • Do programs at times and location convenient to them
  • Bus passes
  • Go to them
  • Bought bikes/buy bikes

List interesting ways of engaging youth.

  • Include music, art, drama
  • Let them lead the activity
  • Testimonials from other youth
  • Let youth recruit
  • Go outside the box
  • Guest speakers
  • FEED THEM!
  • Include movie, TV, pop culture
  • Let them journal, write poetry, free thinking
  • Offer program they want-or at least incorporate pieces. Do they like making videos?-do a project and put it on "You Tube." Do they ride bikes?-offer bike repair lessons
  • Use technology and arts (music)
